Angola beat Cameroon in African derby

Despite a slow start, Angola went on to dominate in their opening President's Cup match against fellow African team Cameroon and ultimately earned a well-deserved win.

Angola vs Cameroon 35:24 (16:14)

Just six months ago, Angola confidently beat Cameroon in the final of the 2021 CAHB African Women's Championship, 25:15, and now they have won again, and even by a slightly bigger margin.

But while 'As Perolas' were seen as favourites, it was their rivals who enjoyed a better start of the encounter. Two goals by Cyrielle Ebanga Baboga and one more by Karishma Ekoh gave Cameroon a 3:0 lead.

Angola woke up and started to catch up, but as both teams missed a lot of opportunities, they claimed their first lead only in the 18th minute at 9:8.

In a close battle, the rivals continued to trade goals, but Angola managed to establish a two-goal lead at the break. After the sides were tied at 14:14, Mbongo Masseu and Vilma Nenganga gave them an edge in the last minute of the first half.

Angola, who were the only last-place team during the preliminary round to avoid three defeats as they drew against Slovenia, improved their shot efficiency after the break and had the upper hand.

Their powerful line player Albertina Kassoma set the tone in attack, finishing the game with six goals from as many attempts, and the gap between the opponents continued to grow slowly but steadily, as Angola enjoyed a 27:21 lead midway through the second half.

Cameroon's coach Serge Guebogo called for a time out, but his team looked tired and found no means to get back into the match. In the end, Angola further increased the gap to claim a commanding win, and they will face the Islamic Republic of Iran on Saturday while Cameroon will take on Uzbekistan.
