Veszprém leapfrog Al-Ahly with big win over Sydney Uni
27 Sep. 2025

Veszprém HC, the title holders of the IHF Men’s Club World Championship, opened their account in the New Administrative Capital with a 51:15 win over Sydney Uni, the largest win so far in this edition.
GROUP B
Sydney Uni (AUS) vs Veszprém HC (HUN) 15:51 (10:27)
After Al-Ahly SC beat Sydney Uni by 27 goals in the first match of this group, Veszprém HC aimed for a bigger win, at least to ensure that a draw would be enough in their last match against the Egyptian powerhouse to secure the first place in the final standings.
But the start of the match was hit-and-miss for Veszprém, as Sydney were down only two goals, 3:5, after the defence conceded too many easy shots, which the Australian side took.
Nevertheless, with Xavi Pascual’s fast-paced system, and Veszprém’s depth, the Hungarian side was guaranteed to improve that lead and did just that, as they absolutely dominated their opponents via fast breaks, with left wing Hugo Descat scoring eight goals.
By the break, the Hungarian side had a 17-goal lead, 27:10, with Pascual constantly shuffling his squad, as by the end of the match only two outfield players, defensive specialists Patrik Ligetvari and Thiagus Petrus did not score at least one goal in the match.
The gap continued to grow over the second half, as Descat’s counterpart on the left wing, Bjarki Mar Elisson, shined and had seven goals himself, while Mate Gancs-Peto, who played on the right wing while being right-handed, added five goals more.
After another small lull midway in the second half, Veszprém pressed the pedal and eventually secured a 51:15 win, jumping to the first place in the group, as Sydney Uni are now sure to finish on the third place, as the team with the largest negative goal difference, -63.
Veszprém will face Al-Ahly SC on Sunday, looking forward to take the first place with yet another win.
