11 Aug. 2024
38 matches have been played in the men’s handball competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with Denmark being crowned Olympic champions for the second time, while Germany secured the silver medal and Spain the bronze medal.
Following the conclusion of the men’s handball competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the All-Star team has been announced.
Four countries – the semi-finalists - are represented in the All-Star team, with four Olympic champions making their way into the ranks.
The MVP of the men’s handball competition at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games is Denmark’s right back, Mathias Gidsel, who broke the record for the number of goals scored in a single edition of the Olympics, 62 goals, formerly held by his teammate, Mikkel Hansen.
Gidsel, the 2023 IHF Male Player of the Year, had three matches where he scored in double digits, including a 13-goal outing against Argentina, while also converting 74% of his shots. The Denmark right back sealed back-to-back MVP titles at the Olympics, after also clinching the award at Tokyo 2020, adding to his ever-growing tally of individual titles, which also consists of an MVP distinction at the 2023 IHF Men’s World Championship.Â
Three of Gidsel’s teammates, Olympic champions at Paris 2024, are also included in the team. Niklas Landin Jacobsen, who will retire from international handball after this edition of the Olympics, was selected as the All-Star goalkeeper, the second time in the All-Star team of the competition, after Rio 2016, when Denmark also were crowned champions.
Line player Lukas Jørgensen and left back Simon Pytlick, the third best scorer of the Olympics, are also in the All-Star team.
Two Germany players – right back Renars Uscins and centre back Juri Knorr – were also selected in the All-Star team, with their team winning six matches and losing only two in the competition.
The wings came from the teams which featured in the bronze medal match. Slovenia’s Blaz Janc was named the All-Star right wing, while Spain’s Daniel Fernandez, a debutant at the Olympic Games, was selected as the All-Star left wing.
