In 2008, Montenegro made their debut at the IHF Women's U20 World Championship in North Macedonia, and they had a decent result, finishing eighth. 16 years later, the tournament will be held in the same country, and the Montenegrins are aiming high once again.

Overall, it will be the sixth World Championship for the Balkan side, who have something to boast as they won bronze at South Korea 2010. Now they qualified for North Macedonia 2024 after finishing eighth at the Women's 19 EHF EURO 2023, which was seen as a good result in Montenegro.

At that tournament, quite a number of Montenegrin players did a good job. In particular, Andrea Brajovic was named the best line player of the competition, and Jelena Vukcevic became the sixth-best scorer with 47 goals.

Now these players have matured and gained more experience in their clubs ā€“ in particular, at WHC Buducnost BEMAX, who played in the Women's EHF Champions League. So Montenegro's head coach Igor Markovic has a reason to hope for a positive result, also given that they will play not too far from their home country.

In Group G, Montenegro are seen as favourites alongside fellow European team Portugal, so they are
expected to reach the main round. And it looks like a win against the Portuguese will give them a good chance to eventually reach the quarter-final.Ā
