Two years ago, this generation of Egypt secured the seventh place at the 2022 IHF Women’s Youth World Championship, the first time in history when the African side clinched a top-10 placement in the world handball flagship competition at the younger age categories.
It has been a stellar achievement for Egypt, which put much attention into developing women’s handball and the results were there to be seen, after they also secured the 15th place at the 2022 IHF Women’s Junior World Championship, their best result to date in their previous three appearances in the competition.
Last autumn, Egypt have also finished second at the 2023 CAHB African Women's Junior Handball Championship, with their five-match winning run being spoilt by champions Angola, in the final, where Egypt conceded a 26:30 loss, but were competitive against the continental powerhouse.
Now, they head once again to the world handball flagship competition, where they were drawn into Group B, alongside Switzerland, Chile and fellow African side Tunisia, whom they won against, 30:27, in the continental competition last September, when Tunisia were hosts.
With a strong core and plenty of experience under their belt, including versatile left wing Mariam Omar Ibrahim, who scored 50 goals at the 2022 IHF Youth Women’s World Championship, Egypt could provide some entertaining challenges for their opponents, as they aim for their maiden appearance in the knockout phase of the world handball flagship competition.
