As an independent nation, Serbia participated in three straight editions of the IHF Womenā€™s Junior World Championship between 2010 and 2014, and the fourth place at Czech Republic 2012 is still their best result. And now they are coming back to this level after a 10-year absence.

At the Womenā€™s 19 EHF EURO 2023, the Balkan side finished 14th of 16 participants, which was not enough to secure a World Championship spot. However, when New Zealand withdrew from the tournament in the spring of 2024, it was Serbia who replaced them.

Having been drawn into a competitive Group F alongside fellow European sides Germany, France and Spain, Serbia are seen as underdogs, but they will try to exceed all expectations and create a surprise. After all, head coach Slavko Krnjajac has some promising players at his disposal.Ā

Right wing Dunja Radevic played for Serbia at the 2023 IHF Womenā€™s World Championship, and centre back Tamara Mandic has also made her debut in the senior team. Besides, players like Vladana Mitrovic, Nora Fajfric, Milica Ignjatovic and Nevena Todorovski also have chance to make a step up in the near future.

So Serbia may prove a hard nut to crack, and their opponents know it. The first match against Germany will be particularly important for the Balkan side, and if they start well, they will boost their confidence.Ā
