Tunisia set new record in big win over Chile

Tunisia snapped a two-match losing streak at the 2024 IHF Women’s Junior World Championship against Chile, with a strong attacking outing, 46:28, as they will be starting Group I of the President’s Cup with two points.

GROUP B
Tunisia vs Chile 46:28 (22:13)

Only one team, Mexico, had a worse goal difference than Chile’s -46 after the first two matches at the 2024 IHF Women’s Junior World Championship, as the South American side had previously conceded two heavy losses against Egypt (16:26) and Switzerland (11:47).

Only the United States of America had scored less goals than Chile in the first two matches, but the South American team had their best half so far, staying close to a strong Tunisia team in the first 11 minutes, with the gap being only three goals in favour of the African team, 9:6.

Six minutes later, Tunisia still had a three-goal lead, but from that moment on, things started to go bad for Chile, as Tunisia’s goalkeeper, Aya Boudhaouia saved seven shots for a 35% efficiency, while right wing Houda Rmiza and right back Loua Dammak combined for nine goals for the African side.

An 8:1 run, spanning between the 17th and the 28th minutes, was decisive for Tunisia, with Chile’s attacking efficiency dropping to only 46%, while the African side converted six of their seven fast breaks in the first half, to dominate the scoreboard, 22:13, at the break.

As 22 goals were scored by Tunisia in the first half, the African side was on its way to register a new record of goals scored in a single match at the IHF Women’s Junior World Championship, set against Kazakhstan, in 2012, when they put 41 past the Asian team.

Sure enough, with a strong attacking display also in the second half, Tunisia hit that mark by the 53rd minute and beat the record by five goals, registering a 46:28 win, as the Alkaloid Player of the Match, right wing Nour Mariem Dabbabi, scored 13 goals from 13 shots, 11 more than she did in the previous two matches against Tunisia and Switzerland combined.

Tunisia will start now the President’s Cup with two points, facing Brazil and the Islamic Republic of Iran, while Chile are on zero points and will try to avoid extending their losing streak to five matches in the next phase of the competition.
