Switzerland dominated Chile and secured the largest win so far at the IHF Women's Junior World Championship and their largest-ever win in the competition, 47:11, claiming a main round spot.
GROUP B
Chile vs Switzerland 11:47 (6:27)
Interestingly, both rivals had conceded 26 goals in their opening matches - but Switzerland beat Tunisia 34:26, while Chile were defeated by Egypt 16:26. And the difference between the rivals was clear from the opening minutes of the first Thursday match in the Boris Trajkovski Sports Center.
Switzerland's goalkeeper Claire Hartz stopped 13 shots in the first half, boasting a 68% save rate, and her saves allowed her teammates to regularly score from counterattacks. The European side’s advantage grew rapidly, reaching five goals, 8:3, only 10 minutes into the game, morphing into a 15:4 after 30 minutes. Switzerland boasted a 90% shot efficiency before the break compared to Chile’s 25%, which translated into a 21-goal gap between the sides (27:6) at the break.
The Europeans scored the biggest numbers of goals in the first half in the current tournament, and they continued to look for more milestones after the restart. In fact, Switzerland started the second half with a 14:0 run before Isidora Valdivieso broke that deadlock in the 47th minute.
In the end, Switzerland won by as many as 36 goals, with 13 of their 14 outfield players putting their names on the scoresheet. Angelina Schläpfer became their leading scorer with eight goals, and goalkeeper Charlotte Chapuis, who replaced Hartz after the break, boasted a 55% save rate.
This was also Switzerland's largest-ever win at the IHF Women's Junior World Championship, beating the previous record of 22 goals, set against Kazakhstan at Slovenia 2022.
With their second win, Switzerland are through to the main round, and on Saturday, they will face Egypt, fighting for points to take with them to the next competition stage. In turn, Chile are now certain to continue in the President’s Cup, but before that, they will meet Tunisia on Saturday.Â
