Depending on how you view life, you can look at Kenya’s preliminary group at Tunisia 2025 either as a glass half full or as a glass half empty situation.

On one hand, they are in a group with two of the medallists of the YAC EURO 16, held last year in Varna, Bulgaria: title-winners Hungary and the third-placed Germany.

On the other hand, the Kenyans also face continental rivals and fellow championship debutants Tanzania, relative newcomers to the sport and, should results go as expected, a direct play-off with them for a main round group place at stake – a win likely securing passage through to the next round as one of the top three sides in their group.

“Our group won’t be easy, but our boys are up for the challenge,” said Coach Boaz Maroko to ihf.info, ahead of the championship. “Facing giants like Germany and Hungary excites us. Our team is focused, determined and proud to wear the Kenyan jersey. We’ve prepared well, ready to compete and we’re heading to Tunisia to fight and grow.

“Being at the world championship is a huge milestone for Kenya and it is our moment to show the world what Kenya’s youth can do.”

That youth includes an 11-name provisional squad without an international appearance between them, but with a core of five players turning out for the ‘Coast Combined’ team, including captain Musa Kakana Mohamed.

“I'm very happy we are at the world championship, although it's our first time, we are ready,” said Mohamed. “Our group draw is good and we believe we shall bring glory to our country us well as being able to qualify through to the 2026 Youth Olympic Games.”

Mombasa, Kilifi and Malindi saw training and talent identification sessions held last December in preparation for Tunisia 2025 and earlier this year, a short youth beach handball festival, tour and further training sessions were held.

“The world championship is a launchpad for young athletes, where future stars will make their mark,” explained Caroline Nyadiero, Kenyan Handball Federation (KHF) Executive Member and responsible for the sport in the country, to ihf.info.

“With teams from across the world we expect a thrilling mix of styles and strategies, but it’s our Olympic dream – the stakes are high and we are battling not just for the world championship but also for a spot in the 2026 Youth Olympic Games.

“This is more than just a tournament – it’s a powerful motivator, fuelling dreams and pushing teams to new heights. The energy of beach handball, combined with the passion of youth competition, creates an electrifying stage for future champions to shine. Let the sand, speed, and spirit of the game ignite a legacy that lasts beyond the final whistle.”
