Romania secure top-10 finish with double-digits win against Switzerland

Romania cruised past Switzerland to seal a top-10 finish, ending their Germany/Netherlands 2025 journey with a commanding 36:24 win, their best result since 2017.

They will finish ninth provided Poland do not win against Austria by 43 goals, which would see Romania finish in single digits for the first time since 2015, when they were bronze medallists.

Main Round, Group I
Switzerland vs Romania 24:36 (9:18)

Switzerland looked set for a strong start, boosted by an excellent opening from Lea Schüpbach between the posts. They held Romania scoreless until the fifth minute, when Lorena Ostase finally broke through. But the same issue that haunted Switzerland throughout the tournament resurfaced again—their turnovers. And they were costly once more.

A string of them handed Romania the breathing room they needed, creating a two-goal gap. Even with Schüpbach still holding a 50% save efficiency, Switzerland kept slipping further behind, and by the 11th minute Romania led 6:2.

For a moment, it looked like Switzerland had found their footing, cutting the gap with a quick 2:0 run. But as soon as Bianca Curmenț settled into the Romanian goal, the momentum flipped right back. By the 16th minute, it was 8:4, and just a few minutes later the lead morphed to six.

Both goalkeepers kept delivering; Schüpbach and Curmenț were in a proper duel, but the numbers behind Switzerland told the real story. By the 20-minute mark, they had already racked up 13 turnovers compared to Romania's two. And it was obvious where this match was heading as Romania marched into the break nine goals ahead.

Nothing changed after the restart. Romania confidently pushed toward their fourth and final win at Germany/Netherlands 2025. Ten minutes into the second half, they hit a double-digit lead when Ostase scored for 24:14. She was outstanding again, as was hummel Player of the Match Bianca Curmenț, who finished with a strong 45% save rate between the posts.

Swiss play took another hit after Tabea Schmid exited with what looked like a knee injury, and as a consequence, Elena Roșu received a direct red card. The gap hovered around ten goals all the way through, with Switzerland narrowing it to eight at best, while Romania opened their largest lead at +11 by the 50th minute. It widened again by the final whistle as Romania closed out a dominant 36:24 win.

Twelve of Romania's 14 outfield players scored at least once, with Lorena Ostase netting eight and Sorina Grozav adding six. On the other side, Daphne Gautschi scored six in Switzerland's final match of their first-ever World Championship, with Era Baumann adding five.
