Hungary, which are seen as one of the main title contenders at North Macedonia 2024, continued their winning run at the tournament, beating Denmark by eight goals, 31:23.Â
MAIN ROUND GROUP II
Hungary vs Denmark 31:23 (15:12)
Last year, the two teams met in the final of the W19 EHF EURO 2023, and Hungary registered a nine-goal win, 35:26, to win the title. And now the Hungarians won by nearly the same margin, proving that they are one of the strongest teams in the competition.
Now both Hungary and Denmark had secured their quarter-final spots before their mutual encounter, but each team was determined to extend their winning run and finish top of the group. And while Hungary reached that goal, Denmark ranked second, conceding their first defeat.
Hungary boasted a solid defence from the start of the match, and 11 of their players found their name of the scoresheet, with the Alkaloid Player of the Match Julia Farkas scoring seven goals from nine attempts. Denmark relied on some good goalkeeping, as Ida Kaysen ended the match with 14 saves, yet it was the Hungarians who had the upper hand.
They took an early control of the game, opening up a 4:1 and later a 7:4 lead, but the Danes hit back and drew level at 9:9 in the 22nd minute. But Hungary pulled in front against, mostly thanks to a string of goals from Lea Farago, and led by three goals at the break.
In the second half, Hungary enjoyed an even bigger dominance, forcing their opponents to make mistakes and punishing them time after time. In the 44th minute, the Hungarians led by seven goals, 24:17, and they did not relax their approach afterwards, cruising to an eight-goal win, which sealed the first place in the standings, confirming their status of big favourites.Â
