Argentina open account, as they cruise past Mexico

After two straight losses, Argentina earned their first victory at the 2024 IHF Women's Junior World Championship, comfortably beating Mexico, 41:15.

GROUP C
Argentina vs Mexico 41:15 (18:5)

Both Argentina and Mexico knew that they were heading to the President's Cup, therefore they had nothing to lose here. But while Mexico hardly had a chance against the Republic of Korea and Hungary, Argentina fought hard against the ambitious Asian side, losing 31:33, therefore they looked to have the upper hand in the last tie of the group.

After the two teams traded goals in the first two minutes, Argentina enjoyed a 13:0 run, with Mexico failing to get their rhythm going into the match. At the break, that 13-goal gap was unassailable, as Argentina conceded the lowest number of goals in a single match in their history at the IHF Women's Junior World Championship, five.

Not much changed after the break, as Argentina continued to entirely dominate on the court. They had a 72% short efficiency compared to Mexico's 33%, and hit the 40-goal mark in the 58th minute. Goalkeepers Rocio Slaibe and Candelaria Cuadrado combined for 16 saves, while left wing Ailin Cabana and left back Sofia Gull Querin, the Alkaloid Player of the Match, scored nine and eight goals, respectively.

Following this result, Argentina will carry two points into the President's Cup, while Mexico, which have no points, aim to end their losing run in the same phase of the competition.
