After nine years off the podiums in their domestic competitions, 2019 IHF Super Globe hosts Al Wehda returned with a vengeance in the 2018/19 season winning all three trophies.

In the Saudi league, they added the trophy to their two previous wins, in 1999/00 and 2009/10. It was also the third triumph in the Cup, after 2002/03 and 2004/05. In the Elite championship, Al Wehda clinched their first title in 2018/19. It was these performances that earned Al Wehda a place in what is their first Super Globe.

“We seek to offer all our honour and honour the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and provide a technical level befitting the reach of Saudi handball,” said Al Wehda goalkeeper Mohammed Salem. “This is the first time that I participate in the Super Globe championship and this is an opportunity in my career.”

Al Wehda meets Brazilian side Taubate in their first game. Taubate have considerable experience at the Super Globe with five participations – all in the last six years.

“We will face Taubate of Brazil – the champion of the South and Central American Clubs Championship. The handball in Brazil is highly developed. We will try to go for the advanced positions at the expense of an unfamiliar team for us,” says Salem.

Salem is right when he says handball in Brazil is well developed, however, Saudi Arabia are working hard to follow in those footsteps. Earlier this month, they participated in their first Men’s Youth World Championship, after contesting their fourth consecutive Men’s World Championship in January.

Al Wehda hope to show that Saudi handball is moving in the right direction, and they take the Super Globe as a great opportunity.

“To be present in a world championship with the best players in the world is beyond imagination. It will certainly increase our experience and help us to enter local competitions with high morale,” concludes Salem.
