Team Info

Alongside Costa Rica, Cuba are the only participants in the 2023 IHF Men's Junior World Championship who are making their debut at this level. But despite the lack of experience, the Caribbean side hopes to put on a decent performance at Germany/Greece 2023.

Last December, the Cubans qualified for the World Championship thanks to a triumph at the North America and Caribbean Junior Championship, where they earned their first ever gold medal. Cuba won all five games at the tournament in style, and in particular, they comfortably defeated the USA in the final (36:23).

That success has certainly boosted the team's confidence, and now they hope to do a good job at their maiden World Championship. However, it will not be easy to compete with home side Greece, Egypt and Saudi Arabia in Group H.

With the exception of left wing Reylan Gonzales, who plays in Portugal, head coach Alexis Luis Michel relies on the players from the domestic clubs. Right wing Maiko Vazquez, centre back Samuel Cordies, left wings Lázaro Vega and Andro Gonzalez were the key players of the team half a year ago in Mexico, and now they are expected to lead by example again.

Key players: Samuel Cordies (centre back), Maiko Vazquez (right wing), Andro Gonzalez (left wing)
