Germany jump to second in Group D

Germany recovered from their round two loss to Denmark and recorded a comfortable win over Chile to close the third day of matches for Group D at the 2019 IHF Men’s Junior World Championship. With the win, the European side took their points tally to four, where they sit alongside Norway and Iceland. Chile remained on zero after what was their third defeat.

GROUP D
Germany vs Chile 39:22 (19:12)

Germany were the clear favourites heading into the match, and certainly delivered on that, taking a 17-goal win at the final whistle. For their part, Chile did an admirable job in attack, reaching a tally of 22 goals at the final buzzer, which was an achievement considering the strength of their opponents.

The U20 EHF EURO 2018 bronze medallists perhaps did not resort to their full power to win the match, and coach Martin Heuberger was able to rotate his bench extensively. At the final whistle, only two court players had not contributed goals – even keeper Till Klimpke managed one, which complemented his 45% save rate. Captain Sebastian Heymann finished as the top scorer of the game, with six goals.

Germany were expected to take the two points, and they kept their focus throughout the game to ensure their tally on the Group D table grew. Chile kept well within reach through the opening quarter, 10:6, before the distance began to grow further. A seven-goal score line at the break might seem ominous for some sides, but for developing Chile, it reflected well on their work over recent years.

Still, there was never much doubt that Germany would collect the points at the buzzer. When they last 15 minutes began, the distance stood at 13 goals, 28:15, and the European side were clearly on the path to victory.

Chile’s top scorer was Felipe Gutierrez with four goals.
