Denmark beat Chile, but will they win group D?

As expected, the Danes won their final group match against a Chile side who were brought back down to earth following a famous victory against Argentina in their previous match.

The result means that Denmark will win the group if Iceland fail to beat Germany in the concluding game of the group later today.

GROUP D
Denmark vs Chile 48:24 (23:9)

After two minutes, the South and Central American bronze medallists led the Scandinavian side 1:0, but by the 10th minute it was 9:1 as Chile kept turning the ball over to their opponents. And even when they did find a way to the line, they either saw their shots blocked or saved by an imposing defence of a Denmark team which Nikolai Vinther had said “had something to prove” at Spain 2019 following their late addition as a replacement nation in March.

In total, thanks to the turnovers and subsequent counter-attacks, the Danes made 61 attempts at the Chilean goal in the 60 minutes with 48 getting through.

Best player of the match Lukas Jorgensen grabbed eight of the goals for the eventual winners despite Chile’s Vicente Gonzalez doing his best to stop the onslaught (he faced 40 attempts in total).

With a win vital for the Danish side to win their group, depending on other results, and Chile already in the 17-24 placement round, both teams are going different ways in Pontevedra and Viga and have very different targets in mind.

Despite the ease of the win for Denmark, their goalkeeping pairing of Salah Boutaf and Christoffer Bonde could only manage six saves each (34%) and they will need to improve those figures if they want to make it to the final weekend.

If Denmark were to win the group with a Germany victory against Iceland later then they will face the fourth-place team in group C, which at the end of this match, was Hungary.

“We played a very complete game, especially the first part where everyone was very disciplined,” said Denmark coach Stefan Madsen to SpainHandball19.com after the match. “It is difficult to keep the intensity in this type of games, but we're happy with the win and are not excessively tired.”

His opposite number Pablo Nunez summed up the game quite simply. “Denmark beat us in all phases of the game.”

Best Player of the Match: Lukas Jorgensen (DEN)
