Key highlights of the day: European derby headlines second day of the main round

The main round of the 27th IHF Men’s World Championship has thrown off in style, with a superb game between Portugal and Norway in Group III. The Germany/Denmark 2019 silver medallists from took a nail-biting 29:28 win against Portugal, slowly getting back into contention for one of the top two places. In the same group, France secured a tough 29:26 win against Algeria, with Switzerland keeping their dream alive after a hard-fought 20:18 win against Iceland.  

Hosts Egypt went back to winning ways in Group IV, cruising past the Russian Handball Federation Team, 28:23. Slovenia took another convincing win against North Macedonia (31:21), but the best was saved for last. The most exciting match ended in a draw, as Sweden mounted an outstanding comeback against Belarus, only to find themselves losing a point, as the match ended in a 26:26 draw after the Scandinavians an eight-goal deficit. 

In the President’s Cup, Austria and Chile recorded their biggest-ever wins in the IHF Men’s World Championship, leading Group II ahead of Morocco and the Republic of Korea.

Today is again packed with matches, with teams from Group I and Group II back into action. The headliner is definitely the match between Spain and Germany in Group I, as the reigning European champions could deal a devastating blow to the German side.

In Group II, Denmark and Croatia eye wins against Qatar and Bahrain, trying to stay on top of the group.

With Cape Verde’s withdrawal, only one game is scheduled in Group I of the President’s Cup, with DR Congo facing Angola in a 100 per cent African clash on Egyptian soil.

Congo’s line player, Gauthier Mvumbi, has become the viral sensation of the 27th IHF Men’s World Championship, receiving a message from legendary basketball player Shaquille O’Neal, after his performance in Egypt. Surprised by the attention he received, he shared his thoughts with us in a superb video interview.

With Spain in action today, Egypt 2021 will be the last World Championship for centre back Raul Entrerrios. ‘The Great Captain’ has already won gold in 2005 and aims to end his career on a high.
