Key highlights of the day: Final matches of the preliminary round throw off

Another exciting day at the 27th IHF Men’s World Championship lies ahead, with eight key games scheduled in four venues throughout Egypt on Monday.

Until the first four groups will have finished the preliminary round, let us look back on the seven games that were played on Sunday, after Germany won the game against Cape Verde 10:0 due to the African side being unable to field at least 10 players with a COVID-19 negative test.

Reigning European champions Spain secured a nerve-wrecking 27:26 win and their place in the main round against Poland, after the Polish side were leading 20:19 with nine minutes to go.

The most intriguing game yet also took place in Group B, as Brazil erased a two-goal deficit with 36 seconds to go to draw against Tunisia (32:32).

Title holders Denmark joined the teams who clinched their main round spot already after their 39:19 win against DR Congo, as well as Hungary, Argentina, Qatar and Croatia.

Eight games are set to be played on Monday, still with more main round places up for grabs.

A Group G do-or-die clash is set to be played in Cairo Stadium Sports Hall, as Chile face North Macedonia, with the winner set to progress to the main round. After the third main round berth is secured, hosts Egypt are facing their toughest test so far: European powerhouse Sweden.

Elsewhere, everything is possible in Group E, with Austria facing a must-win game against Germany/Denmark 2019 silver medallists Norway, while Iceland can also progress further in the championship provided they do not lose against Morocco in Group F.

In Group H, Slovenia and Belarus will be looking to improve their main round tally, as they join the Russian Handball Federation Team in the next round, with Velimir Petkovic’s side already at three points after their win against Slovenia and a draw against Belarus.

Three teams made their debut in the IHF Men’s World Championship in Egypt, with Uruguay starting the competition with two defeats against Germany and Hungary. However, the South American side are still upbeat and you can read their story here

Poland might have lost their game against Spain, but their core is still young and eyes a golden future. Their defence is crucial to their play and a pair of brothers, Maciej and Tomasz Gebala, are the main pillars in that area.

Norwegian playmaker Sander Sagosen is the top scorer after two rounds with 21 goals, and you can watch some of his goals on our Facebook page, where you can keep up to date with Egypt 2021.
