Referees for the Men's Youth (U19) World Championship announced

The International Handball Federation (IHF) has announced the list of referees for the 2023 IHF Men’s Youth (U19) World Championship, which will be staged from 2 to 13 August in Croatia.

According to the updated Regulations for International and Continental Referees and Regulations for Official IHF Referee Courses, the IHF Playing Rules and Referees Commission has nominated four continental referee couples to officiate in the event.

Following the IHF Council decision of 4 March 2022, the 2023 IHF Men’s Youth (U19) World Championship in Croatia will serve as official IHF Referee assessment for these continental couples.

The German Handball Federation (DHB) and the Greek Handball Federation have opened the accreditation procedure for the Men's IHF U21 World Championship (20 June to 2 July 2023).

Please complete the form at dhb.de/media. The deadline for accreditation is 30 May 2023, 12:00 CEST. Applications received later will not be considered. You will receive a confirmation of your accreditation application by e-mail after the accreditation deadline. The accreditation will be handed out at your chosen venue.

Invitation to tender for the Senior World Championship 2029 and 2031

The IHF has put out to tender the following four editions of its Senior flagship events:

2029 Women’s World Championship
2031 Men’s World Championship
2031 Women’s World Championship

All member federations interested in hosting the above World Championships are invited to submit their letter of intent until 30 June 2023 as well as a corresponding event concept by 30 September 2023 at the latest. After all bidding documents have been reviewed, the first inspections are planned to take place in October before the IHF Council decides on the awarding of the events.

Statement regarding the Medical Precaution Plan for the 28th IHF Men's World Championship

The IHF was the first International Federation to create and apply a Medical Precaution Plan in 2021, which also served as a model for the Olympic movement and numerous other sports federations.

Preserving the health of the players being of utmost importance for the IHF, we have created a Medical Precaution Plan with the objective of protecting our players by reducing the spread of COVID-19 infections to a minimum.

By requiring all stakeholders of the World Championship to do a PCR test before arrival, we make sure that no participant is infected when arriving in the host countries. This has become even more important after the restrictions have been lifted in most countries around the world, leading to an increased risk of getting infected.

Furthermore, we have established a testing plan to be applied during the World Championship to make sure all players are healthy and able to play the matches. Handball is a dynamic and fast game with a lot of body contact and therefore requires all players to be in excellent health. Since asymptomatic carriers of the virus can also infect other players and stakeholders, the planned tests are the most effective measure to prevent the spread of the virus and keep all stakeholders safe and healthy.

The IHF tries to control as much as possible, while accepting that we have to live with the virus. We cannot dictate to the hotels that there has to be a separation between the teams and the other hotel guests, because the hotels follow the guidelines of the respective countries. However, the IHF wants to do everything in our power to prevent the spread. This includes measures such as testing, allowing us to identify and isolate infected players as quickly as possible to avoid that the entire team drops out. In this context, it needs to be pointed out that isolated players will be accommodated in a separate room but will not be confined in this room for five days.
As far as the spectators are concerned, there is enough distance and players are asked not to seek contact with the audience.

Our medical team on site will closely monitor the situation during the tournament in order to decide if the Medical Precaution Plan needs to be adapted. It is thus subject to change at any time according to the development of the situation related to COVID-19 during the tournament.

We are aware of the fact that not all stakeholders might be in favour of the proposed measures. However, the IHF received information from several countries where friendly tournaments were organised during which several cases have been reported. Furthermore, the spread of the new and highly contagious XBB.1.5 variant of the virus shows that the pandemic still needs to be taken seriously. The guidelines in the organising countries might deviate from the Medical Precaution Plan, however, it is the IHF’s responsibility to organise a safe IHF Men’s World Championship for all stakeholders and we are making every effort to do so by applying measures that proved to be effective.

We kindly ask all stakeholders of the event to cooperate and to play their part in the organisation of a safe and successful championship for the sake of our beloved sport.

The media accreditation process for the 28th IHF Men’s World Championship in Poland and Sweden (11-29 January 2023) is now open.

If you are a professional media representative and interested in applying and covering the World Championship, please click here.

There, you find the accreditation form for the 28th IHF Men’s World Championship. Please fill out all fields and submit the form. You will then receive an automatic delivery confirmation via email. The confirmation of the accreditations will be sent out at a later point.

The deadline for accreditation applications is 30 November 2022.

The Organising Committee is also working on the official media guide for the event, which will include all information related to the media centres at the venues (opening hours, parking, transport, media tribunes, Mixed Zone, press conference room, etc.).

Referees for IHF Women's Youth (U18) World Championship announced

The International Handball Federation (IHF) has announced the list of referees for the 2022 IHF Women’s Youth (U18) World Championship, which will be staged from 30 July to 10 August in North Macedonia.

According to the updated Regulations for International and Continental Referees and Regulations for Official IHF Referee Courses, the IHF Playing Rules and Referees Commission has nominated eight continental referee couples to officiate in the event.

Following the IHF Council decision of 4 March 2022, the 2022 IHF Women’s Youth (U18) World Championship in North Macedonia will serve as official IHF Referee assessment for these continental couples.

The International Handball Federation (IHF) has announced the list of referees for the 2022 IHF Women’s Junior (U20) World Championship, which will be staged from 22 June to 3 July in Slovenia.

Tokyo 2020: Update on accreditation and number of players

Following regular discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee as well as two meetings of all team sport federations based on the initiative of the International Handball Federation (IHF), two major changes will be enacted for the handball competition at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

1. Two Training Partner accreditations

As already known, in case of injury or special circumstances each National Federation is allowed to:

Replace one player with any player from the provisional list (‘list of 28’) up until the quarter-finals
Replace on one occasion a goalkeeper with another goalkeeper who is included in the provisional list (‘list of 28’) up until the final)

If a team has additional athletes as possible replacements present on site, now two additional accreditations (P-Accreditation / Training Partner) will be available to allow those athletes to train with the team.

2. Group of 15 for each match

Instead of the ‘14+1’ system, allowing teams to select 14 players and being able to replace one of those only once with the 15th player up until the final, teams will now have the possibility to choose 14 players out of a group of 15 officially accredited athletes on site for each match without any particular reason.

IHF accepting nominations for IHF Athletes’ Commission

Candidatures are now being accepted for the composition of the IHF Athletes’ Commission for the election period of 2021-2024.

The IHF Athletes’ Commission is composed of five members with at least two members from each gender.

Candidate requirements

Nominees must be at least 20 years of age and have never been sanctioned for a doping offence or unsportsmanlike action(s). In addition, they must have participated in at least two senior IHF World Championships, be an active handball player and have a good command of the English language.

Voting process and period

National Federations must nominate their candidates using the online candidature form before 30 June 2021.

Voting will take place electronically from 24 to 29 July 2021, during Tokyo 2020.

The International Handball Federation (IHF) has invited all 209 Member Federations to tender for the upcoming IHF Senior and Youth Beach Handball World Championships.

The Tokyo 2020 handball competitions start on Saturday, 24 July, with the preliminary round of the men’s tournament throwing off. The women’s competition starts the following day, on Sunday, 25 July. The medal matches will be played on 7 August (men) and 8 August (women).

The Hungarian Handball Federation (HHF) has launched the media accreditation process for the Tokyo Handball Qualification 2020 Women's Tournament 2 in Győr, which will be staged from 19 to 21 March 2021.

The Royal Spanish Handball Federation has opened the media accreditation process for the Tokyo Handball Qualification 2020 Women's Tournament 1, which will be held in Llíria from 19 to 21 March 2021.

Professional media representatives interested in covering this tournament can apply for a media accreditation here.

Deadline for the accreditation application is 15 March 2021. Requests received after this deadline will not be considered.

Amendment of IHF working practices

As a consequence of the increase in COVID-19 cases in Switzerland, home of the IHF Head Office, the IHF has decided to adapt the working practices at the IHF Head Office. As of 19 October, the IHF staff members will be working from home until further notice.

The IHF remains operational as normal to provide assistance to federations, media and other stakeholders and is available for any requests or questions on how to handle this challenging situation.

The IHF encourages everyone to follow the advice provided by the World Health Organization and local authorities to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

PR of China to participate in IHF Women’s Tokyo 2020 Qualification Tournaments

Earlier this year, the Chinese Handball Association (CHA) withdrew from the 2020 IHF Women’s Tokyo 2020 Handball Qualification Tournaments due to COVID-19 restrictions.

As the withdrawal was a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic and the tournaments have been postponed to 2021 (19-21 March), the IHF Executive Committee has approved CHA’s request for their participation to be reinstated as their withdrawal no longer applies.

Therefore, the composition of the tournaments will be based on the original Qualification System Principles and the tournaments will be played by the originally qualified teams.

2020 IHF Women’s Youth and Junior World Championships postponed to 2021

Following a comprehensive analysis of ongoing travel restrictions and safety measures related to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a survey of the qualified teams about their likelihood and willingness to participate, the IHF has decided to postpone the 2020 IHF Women’s Youth (U18) World Championship in Croatia and the 2020 IHF Women’s Junior (U20) World Championship in Romania to 2021. The decision was made yesterday (30 September) by the IHF Council.

The IHF will coordinate the new event dates with the host federations and respective governments, as well as with other stakeholders involved.

Players who would have been eligible to participate in the above-mentioned events originally scheduled for 2020 remain eligible to play in the postponed events in 2021.

The IHF would like to thank the Organising Committees as well as the participating National Federations for their cooperation during these uncertain times.

2020 IHF Men’s Super Globe called off

Due to ongoing restrictions and other organisational challenges brought upon by the COVID-19 pandemic, the IHF Council decided on Wednesday, 23 September, to cancel the previously postponed 2020 IHF Men’s Super Globe set to take place in Saudi Arabia.

The annual event featuring some of the top handball clubs from around the world was originally scheduled from the 6 to 10 October. On 16 July, the IHF Council decided to postpone the event due to COVID-19 restrictions in the host country and logistical challenges.

Additionally, the IHF Council also decided to prolong Saudi Arabia’s contract to host the competition by one year, originally agreed upon from 2019 to 2022, until 2023.

The participating club teams of the 2021 IHF Men’s Super Globe, apart from the organiser and the reigning champion, will be determined on the basis of continental qualification events to be played in the 2020/2021 season.

The IHF would like to thank the Saudi Arabian Handball Federation as well as everyone involved with the planning and organisation of the IHF Men’s Super Globe. The IHF looks forward to another successful IHF Men’s Super Globe in Saudi Arabia in 2021.

South and Central American teams for 2020 Women’s Youth and Junior World Championships determined

In June, the South and Central America Handball Confederation (SCAHC) notified the IHF that it was unable to organise the qualification events for the 2020 Women’s Youth and Junior World Championships in Croatia and Romania, respectively, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Further to the proposal of SCAHC, which has been confirmed by the SCAHC Congress on 11 August 2020, the IHF Council considered the matter a case of force majeure and decided to nominate the participating teams from the SCAHC for the 2020 Women’s Youth and Junior World Championships based on the qualification for the last Women’s Youth and Junior World Championships in 2018.

Therefore, the three teams that are qualified from the SCAHC are as follows:

2020 Women’s Junior (U20) World Championship

About the events
The 2020 Women’s Youth World Championship, originally scheduled from 18 to 30 August in PR of China, and later rescheduled to 29 September to 11 October in Croatia due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has been further postponed, with the exact date yet to be determined.

2020 IHF Men’s Super Globe and Women’s Youth World Championship postponed

The IHF Council decided yesterday (16 July), in their eighth meeting of this electoral period, to postpone the 2020 IHF Men’s Super Globe as well as the 2020 IHF Women's Youth (U18) World Championship.

The IHF is continuously monitoring the situation regarding COVID-19 with the health and safety of teams and their entourage, officials, delegates, staff and fans as top priorities. The restrictions in the host countries and other organisational challenges, the IHF and the organisers would have to face has led to the decision that the two events cannot be held in the originally scheduled period.

The 2020 IHF Women's Youth (U18) World Championship was scheduled to take place from 29 September to 11 October in Croatia, while the 2020 IHF Men’s Super Globe was scheduled to be held from 6 to 10 October in Saudi Arabia.

The IHF will now find a solution with all stakeholders involved and provide updates on the competitions in due course.

The 2020 Women’s IHF Trophy Intercontinental Phase, originally scheduled from 24 to 29 March, then rescheduled to 13 to 17 October due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has been further postponed, with the exact date yet to be determined. The competition will remain in Colombia as originally planned.

The IHF continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation with health and safety as its top priorities. Should there be any additional changes needed to be made to the competition, the IHF will provide updates accordingly.

Update: 25 April 2020

The 2020 Women’s IHF Trophy Intercontinental Phase, originally scheduled from 24 to 29 March, will now take place from 13 to 17 October. The competition will remain in Colombia as originally planned.

About the IHF Trophy Intercontinental Phase

The youth tournament will feature Guatemala, Guinea, Martinique, New Caledonia and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. The junior tournament will feature Bosnia and Herzegovina, Colombia, Mexico, New Caledonia, Senegal and Uzbekistan.

The winner of this year's Women’s Junior Intercontinental Phase is automatically qualified for the 2020 IHF Women’s Junior (U21) World Championship to be held in Romania from 1 to 13 December.

Qualification deadline for 2021 Men’s World Championship extended

During their meeting on 29 April 2020, the IHF Council decided to extend the deadline for the organisation of the remaining 2021 Men’s World Championship qualification tournaments in North America and the Caribbean and South and Central America until 31 October 2020.

Up to now, 28 teams have already qualified for the event, with qualification tournaments in North America and the Caribbean as well as South and Central America still to be played and two Wild Cards to be awarded.

Originally, the North America and the Caribbean Men’s Championship in Mexico was scheduled to be held from 1 to 7 June 2020 but had to be postponed until further notice due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The South and Central American Handball Confederation postponed their Last Chance Tournament, originally scheduled for 15 to 21 June in El Salvador, as well for the same reason.

At both events, one team each has the chance to qualify for the 2021 Men’s World Championship, which will be staged in Egypt from 13 to 31 January.

IHF Ball Regulations update

The International Handball Federation (IHF) has updated the IHF Ball Regulations to conform with the IHF Handball Requirements and Test Methods.

Changes include but are not limited to the identification of IHF approved balls (Article 5.2) due to the different categories of handballs (played with resin/played without resin), as well as the different categories of IHF approval ('IHF APPROVED PRO' and 'IHF APPROVED').

IHF Trophy tournaments in Central and South America postponed

The health and safety of everyone involved in the process to organise and play the IHF Trophy tournaments are the top priorities of the International Handball Federation.

As a result, the three IHF Trophy tournaments scheduled to take place within the upcoming weeks in Central and South America have been postponed due to the ongoing challenges presented by COVID-19 such as travel restrictions and government mandates.

The 2020 Women’s IHF Trophy Intercontinental Phase scheduled from 24 to 29 March in Colombia, the men’s South America Zone Tournament scheduled for 31 March to 5 April in Colombia and the men’s Central America Zone Tournament scheduled from 1 to 5 April in Nicaragua will be rescheduled in due course.

The media accreditation process for the IHF Tokyo Handball Qualification 2020 in Berlin (17-19 April) is now open.

If you are a professional media representative and interested to apply and cover this tournament please visit the the following page: www.dhb.de/mediaberlin.

TV and radio stations and journalists have to contact Anita Veit/Lagardére Sports Germany directly via [email protected].

There you find the accreditation form for the above-mentioned event. Please fill in all fields (mandatory fields marked with a *). You will receive a confirmation on receipt of the application via e-mail soon after successfully filling in all requested fields of the form.

Deadline for the accreditation application is 24 March 2020. Later, no applications will be processed due to high demand.

The earliest possible arrival date is Thursday, April 16. The latest departure date is Monday, April 20.

Following the announcement on 13 December, whereby the then Hungarian women’s national team coach Kim Rasmussen was suspended from any handball coaching activities at a national and international level with immediate effect, and the case referred to the International Handball Federation Ethics Commission (IHFEC) for further action, the IHFEC has now ruled that:

1. The conduct attributed to Kim Rasmussen represents a violation of the IHF Ethics Code, particularly its Article 5 according to the reasons and conclusions established in this decision.

2. The decision rendered by the IHFEC given the serious nature of the failure and the principle of proportionality of the sanction, is to impose on Kim Rasmussen:

a) a three-month suspension counted from December 10, 2019 from any coaching handball activities in any official international event organised, endorsed or approved by the IHF and at any national level, taking into consideration that the named suspension shall be reduced to two months due to the apology expressed by Kim Rasmussen

and

b) a fine of CHF 5,000

both for violation of the Integrity principle contained in Article 5 of the Ethics Code, in accordance with the provisions of Article 9 of the IHF Ethics Code, further urging Mr Kim Rasmussen not to repeat the conduct in the future, and thus leaving without effect any other sanction imposed against him by any other IHF body, to avoid duplicity or confusion.

This decision was enforceable after the IHF Ethics Commission notified the IHF Council, Hungarian Handball Federation and Mr Kim Rasmussen on Monday 10 February.

Thailand replace PR of China in the Tokyo 2020 Women’s Qualification Tournament

Due to the withdrawal of the People’s Republic of China and Hong Kong’s invitation decline because of the coronavirus, Thailand have been named as the 12th nation that will participate in the Tokyo 2020 Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament.

In accordance to the Asian ranking at the qualification event and the previous withdrawal of DPR of Korea, the addition of Thailand produces the following:

Thailand will play in Olympic Qualification Tournament #3 from 20 to 22 March in Montenegro with Norway, Montenegro and Romania.

Kazakhstan will now take part in Olympic Qualification Tournament #2 from 20 to 22 March in Hungary with Russia, Serbia and Hungary.

People’s Republic of China withdraw from Tokyo 2020 Women’s Olympic Qualification Event

The Chinese Handball Association has informed the International Handball Federation (IHF) that it has withdrawn its team from the Tokyo 2020 Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament, taking place from 20 to 22 March 2020 in Hungary.

The IHF will announce the substitute nation according to the Regulations for Olympic Qualification Tournaments in due course.
