Maceió, capital and the largest city of the coastal state of Alagoas in Brazil, is the host of the 2018 Women’s South and Central American Championship which acts as a qualification event for the 2019 IHF Women’s World Championship to be held in Kumamoto, Japan, in December next year.

Host nation Brazil (BRA) will compete alongside Paraguay (PAR), Chile (CHI), Argentina (ARG) and Uruguay (URU) in the five-nation championship which will be played in a round-robin, league format. The top two teams will qualify through to Japan 2019.

The SESI Arena witnessed a tight opening day match between Argentina and Paraguay which was all-square at the break (16:16), but Argentina powered ahead in the second period to win 28:26. Chile then defeated Uruguay in the second match 24:19.

The second day saw a dominating 28:9 win from the host nation Brazil against Uruguay, who they restricted to just three first-half goals. In the early match, Paraguay got off to winning ways, defeating Chile 28:21.
