Teams, referees and officials have been arriving in Oceanside, California (USA), ahead of the 2018 Pan American Beach Handball Championships as United States Team Handball (USATH) and their team of volunteers make their final preparations for the event which throws-off on Thursday (8 March).

Lasting until Sunday 11 March, the championship features eight teams each in the men’s and women’s competitions who will be vying not only for regional honours, but also a ticket to the 2018 IHF Men’s and Women’s Beach Handball World Championships, hosted by Kazan, Russia from 24-29 July.

After the Pan American tournament draw which took place at the IHF headquarters on 23 February, the preliminary groups were decided with the men’s competition seeing Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Trinidad and Tobago battle it out in Preliminary Group A, while Group B seeing hosts, and title holders USA, come up against Argentina, Mexico and Puerto Rico.

2016 women’s winners Uruguay are in Group A along with Paraguay, Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago, while record winners Brazil are in Group B, going up against Argentina, Chile and hosts, USA.

Trinidad and Tobago will be making their debut in the championships in both the men’s and women’s competitions, while Puerto Rico will be appearing for the first time too, in the men’s competition.

Many teams have already played friendly matches, with strong favourites in both competitions – Brazil, who did not participate in the last edition of the competition – arriving in California late last week as they bid to take a double gold.
