The draw for Europe’s qualification Phase 2 for the 26th IHF Men’s World Championship in Germany and Denmark took place in Zagreb on the fringe of the EHF EURO 2018, with IHF Representative Frantisek Taborsky in attendance. The draw was completed after qualification Phase 1 finished in January 2018, and after the final ranking of all but the top four positions at the EHF EURO 2018 were confirmed.

A total of 10 places are available for European teams at the IHF World Championship, with one awarded to the winner of the EHF EURO – in 2018, Spain, and the next nine determined in a two-leg home-and-away play-off system. The play-offs will take place in June 2018.

The results of the draw see the following pairings for the play-offs:

Serbia vs Portugal

Lithuania vs Iceland

Czech Republic vs Russia

Slovenia vs Hungary

Belarus vs Austria

FYR Macedonia vs Romania

Netherlands vs Sweden

Norway vs Bosnia-Herzegovina or Switzerland

Croatia vs Montenegro

As hosts of the World Championship, Germany and Denmark are automatically qualified, as are France, as winners of the event in 2017. The play-off place between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Switzerland is yet to be decided, as there is an open legal case regarding qualification from Phase 1.

“For the third straight time, we have to duel for a World Championship ticket with a real tough opponent – first Hungary, then Norway and now again Hungary. Hungary have really invested a lot. These will be hammer matches,” Secretary General of the Slovenian Handball Federation (bronze medallists at the 2017 World Championship), Goran Cvijic, was quoted on the EHF website.

Teams from other continents already qualified for the event are Saudi Arabia, Qatar, South Korea, Bahrain – all semi-finalists at the 2018 Asian Men’s Championship, Tunisia, Egypt and Angola – the top three at the 2018 African Championship.

The 2019 World Championship will be played from January 9 to 27. More information on Europe’s qualification can be found here
