In the context of the 131st Session of the International Olympic Committee, it was announced in the media that the decision about the inclusion of beach handball will be made during said IOC Session, which took place in Lima from 13 to 16 September 2017.

However, even though the 2024 Olympic programme was on the agenda on 15 September, this did not include beach handball. The IOC Executive Board will take the decision about additional sports in 2019/20. Furthermore, in case beach handball should become an Olympic sport at some point, the IHF will not tolerate any reduction of the indoor handball quota at the Olympics as was stated in the media.

Nevertheless, in their letter from 9 June 2017 the IOC informed the IHF that they will work together “to identify potential showcasing opportunities for this exciting discipline at Tokyo 2020, to build on its introduction at the Youth Olympic Games to Buenos Aires 2018.”
